Sprout NY

is human dialogue or architecture

is call and response, inhalation then exhalation, or landscape

is threshold, event, occasion

is mapping and way finding, navigation

is recording or representation or filtering

is meeting and networking

It is my hope that this becomes a forum for dialogue. Seth and I really have no set agenda but some ideas as to how to disect and engage this city from two different places and perspectives and hopefully generate some kind of discourse.

Despite good intentions Seth and I rarely see each other and when we do we often comment on how different the East Village (where I live) is than the Upper West Side (where he lives.) According to Google Earth we are 6 miles apart and in between us lay a field of infinite possibilities for exploration.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the water levels rising and what’s going to happen here. This poster seemed to remind me of what I see as things resuming a place of origin. The island of Manhattan is largely a granite schist which was carved out of the weaker rock around it by ages of glacial movements. The recesses left behind became the rivers that border the island when the glaciers began to melt. The glaciers are apparently still melting and water is rising. Water will keep rising and cover much of what we see. In other words, Manhattan will return to it’s origin. In essence, nothing changes in terms of embodied energy, just form-what has the capacity to carve has the capacity to fill.
